Sam immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1933. As the U.S. entered WWII. He was living in Troy, and in August of 1942 Sam enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  He was sent to the Naval Training Station, Great Lakes for “boot camp”.  Upon graduation from there he received orders to the Navy’s Aviation Metalsmith School in Norman, Oklahoma.  After refining his metalsmith skills he was assigned to Fleet Air Wing 17, HedRon aboard the USS Tangier, a seaplane tender.  Aboard the Tangier Sam repaired the Navy’s tough PBY Catalina seaplanes of “Black Cat Warrior” fame.  As additional duty Sam flew reconnaissance patrols aboard these aircraft as an observer.  The USS Tangier was deployed extensively throughout the South Pacific.  His last duty station was Naval Air Station, San Diego from where he was honorably discharged in October of 1945.
